The only military rifle designed and built from the ground up to be a sniper
rifle. There are many visible, but few real, similarities between this
weapon and the AK series. Not as accurate a system as it's reputation implies.
It is an old system and is easily outclassed by current western sniper
systems. It is a light weight system and handles very well but it is amost
impossible to improve the accuracy of this system. The barrel is thin and
cannot be freefloated and there is no provision for a bipod. The reticle
of the PSO-1 scope uses a range finder scale based on the estimated average
5'6" man, though at ranges beyond 700m this scale is less accurate.
The scope bullet drop compensator (BDC) can only be set in 100m increments.
The scope does have a battery powered reticle illuminator for low light
situations. It also can detect or use an IR light source, but active IR
systems are now obsolete so this IR filter is hardly used even on the rare
occasion that it does work. The other two compatible scopes are Night Vision
Scopes and the PGN-1 is roughly comparable to the US AN/PVS-4 NVS.
