CAR-15 is a shorter, carbine version of the M16 series of weapons. It
has a shorter barrel and a collapsible buttstock. It was extensively used
by US Army Special Forces and US Navy SEALs during the Vietnam conflict.
It is just as reliable and almost as accurate at longer ranges than it's
larger brother. This weapon has proved very popular with operators. It
is much better suited for jungle, forest, or urban operations and as a
close quarter combat primary weapon. The original CAR-15 was designated
the XM177E2 and also known as the Colt Commando. Captain Trout used one
extensively during his time with MACV SOG. There are quite a few barrel
lengths available. The Colt Commando had a 10 inch barrel. Another more
modern version, the Colt Sporter, has a 16 inch barrel. The one that Benny
Ray uses has an 11 1/2 inch barrel. The modern M4 or M4A1, currently being
fielded to US Special Operations Forces, with it's 14.5 inch barrel is
the ultimate upgraded version. Benny Ray's CAR-15 is an A1 series weapon
as noted by it's thinner barrel and A1 rear sight. This weapon can also
be fitted with the under barrel M203 40mm grenade launcher.
